Each year business people around Memphis and the Mid-South give
Junior Achievement a hand in raising funds for JA programs and
activities by taking part in the annual "Bowlin' On The River"
Bowl-A-Thon. The Bowl-A-Thon is not only the primary source of
funding but also a major source of entertainment for thousands of
participants. This year we expect more than 100 companies and 6,000
bowlers to participate.
JA Classroom programs give students a taste of the real world
Junior Achievement has been bringing the real world to students in public and private schools throughout the Greater Memphis Are for over 50 years. JA's volunteers are valuable role models, raising aspirations and encouraging achievement. Studies show that JA graduates:
- Have a better understanding of economics
- Perform better academically
- Are more likely to attend college
- Feel that they're better prepared to make decisions
Students learn economics by running their own city
In JA BizTown, 4th-6th grade students get hands-on experience in economics, financial literacy and entrepreneurship by running their own city for a day. Teachers prepare students four weeks in advance with lessons on economics, budgeting and banking. The students then prepare to run one of the 15 businesses in JA BizTown. In JA BizTown, students:
- Apply for a job
- Develop a business plan and create a budget
- Pay off their business loans and spend their paychecks
